After James Bond (Sean Connery) has left MI6, the British government turns to Commander Redwine (Patrick Malahide) for help. The new villain, General Ourumov (Michael Gothard), plans to trigger a global conflict that will secure his power. Bond is eventually captured by General Ourumov and is brought aboard the St Petersburg Soviet Submarine Red October. He uses a video camera to record his escape from the submarine's missile battery room, but after being pursued by enemy divers, Bond re-enters the missile bay door he'd just exited. Ourumov is the only one who knows where Bond is hiding. Despite Ourumov's best efforts, Bond survives and escapes to England. After his flight, Bond reveals to M (Judi Dench) that he knows she was involved in his past MI6 missions (he knew she was behind his theft of a Soviet submarine's nuclear missile). He also reveals that he'd met with M in her earlier life. M then reveals that she had been working for MI6 years ago during World War II, doing intelligence work for the Gestapo under the name of Melina Havelock. She had changed her name after being tortured by her German captors. M also reveals why she had been calling Bond the "old friend" of hers. In France, Red October leaves port without authorization from the Russian Navy. As it nears Ireland, a nuclear missile is launched at its location, but a Russian fighter intercepts and destroys the missile. Bond boards a British Royal Navy destroyer and informs M of his whereabouts. Red October's captain had been killed by Ourumov earlier during an escape attempt. The captain's body was found in the missile bay where Bond hid before escaping with help from Red October's crew (a Soviet diver had stayed behind as well as to guard against any further rescue attempts). Bond meets with M aboard his secret submarine, HMS "X-1". Bond had used his training to evade capture by Ourumov, and he has the ship completely refueled in one hour. He then destroys Red October's nuclear missile against Ourumov's wishes. Red October proceeds to dock at Portsmouth Naval Dockyard, where any information given to Bond by his superiors is stored in a safe under the name "Hennessey". On the HMS X-1, Bond finally confronts Ourumov. M comes aboard with a squad of SAS soldiers and holds off Bond's enemies while he completes an escape. Bond later returns to England with M. Bond is later sent to Krasnogorsk, USSR, to investigate a meeting between arms smuggler Brad Whitaker and General Ourumov. Bond learns that top British and Soviet officials are being kidnapped by General Ourumov who then replaces them with their double. From this, Bond comes to the conclusion that an attack on Britain via submarine is Ourumov's plan. This is confirmed when Bond finds plans for a modified Red October sub in Ourumov's office. Bond meets with Commander Redwing at the naval base where he introduces her to "Captain Hennessey". eccc085e13
